Retro fashion is back in vogue once again, this time with some interesting twists

Bell bottoms, bright coloured dresses and big sunglasses may be a throwback to the past. But if the current trends are anything to go by, retro fashion is back in a
big way.

Falguni Peacock, for one, has even included retro influences in her latest collection under the label Spendthrift. “Retro has been in for a while now; it’s just that it’s now percolating down to the masses. But now is the time to go for bolder colours, bell bottoms and high-waist pants,” she notes.

Arshiya Fakih, on the other hand, feels that it all boils down to fashion being cyclical. “What goes around comes around; so yes, bright colours, funky jewellery and big
sunglasses are the ‘in’ thing right now. Of course, the silhouette is very fitted, but the retro influence is very strong,” she explains.

Nikasha Tawadey certainly agrees. “Retro chic is very popular right now, but what you see now may not necessarily be its truest version. The look is more fine-tuned; it’s the contemporary interpretation of the ‘60s, ‘70s and the ‘80s look,” she says, adding that her own collections feature dhoti silhouettes and Nehru collars, which hail back from the same time period and are in their own way very retro. To cite an example, she says, “The bell bottom pants that you see may not have the same 20 inch wide flare from the ‘60s; a 14 inch flare is more likely today.”

Maheka Mirpuri too believes that the retro era has begun yet again. “It’s been around for a while now; so hats, caps and high-waist trousers have done well. Moreover, accessories and scarves are also a good idea. Similarly, belts below the waist, the anarkali silhouette, big sleeves and frills are all from the past,” she replies.

Jewellery designer Queenie Dhody has the last word when she says, “Retro, to me, never went out of fashion. It has always been around, even if you look around, you will see that the disco look with big sunglasses, the bags and the beady jewellery is not exactly new. Of course, it has a lot more takers now.”
