The recruitment drive, organised by the E-Cell, will be held today

In a first by IIT-Bombay, the institute is all set to initiate ‘start-up jobs’ as part of its final placements this year, which will enable both third-year and final-year students to participate in the recruitment drive. While the third-year students will be able to look at internships in a start-up, it will enable final-year students to decide if they want to work in one.

Organised by the Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) of IIT-B along with the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), the event will be held on November 8. “The NEN start-up job initiative is the country’s first campus-recruiting programme for start-ups which facilitate students to join one, providing them an opportunity to get involved in a growing company at the beginning of their careers. We have clubbed the initiative with the institute’s final placement programme,” said Cyrus Vesvikar, media manager of E-Cell.

He explained that this effort by E-Cell could help “cushion the blow” that the slowdown could have on the graduates, since the number of companies coming to the institute, to offer job placements and internships, could go down. “The recent foreign internship ban by IIT-B has also led to restrictions on the students for whom internships are compulsory. We give them, through this, an alternate option to carry out their internships in start-ups,” said Vesvikar.

According to the E-cell, the primary aim behind introducing this concept was to give the students a “good feel” of what happens inside a start-up which may motivate them to start their own enterprises. The event will include both B.Tech. and M.Tech. students from various disciplines. The final-year students will be ready to begin full-time jobs by June 2009.

The start-ups, which will represent various sectors, will give a brief presentation to the students on Saturday about the company, its market opportunity, product description and positions available. Students will be able to visit company booths, talk with members and see hands-on product and technology demonstrations. “Students will also be able to speak one-on-one with the CEO of the company of their choice. After which, they can decide whether or not they want to apply for the job,” said Vesvikar.
