CHANDIGARH: Former supercop KPS Gill, who is credited with decimating militancy in Punjab, now wants to usher in clean politics and better governance.

Towards that aim, he has floated a political outfit, Tehreek-e-Watan Parastan-e-Hind,  with the avowed aim of ridding Indian politics of “undesirable elements”.

Gill said his outfit would not necessarily contest elections but constantly endeavour to bring in people with good vision and character”.

“An increasing number of criminals and anti-national elements  have entered parliament and state legislatures and have undermined governance,” he said. “Constitutional rights, freedom and legal processes are freely exploited by anti-national and criminal elements even while those who care for the country are intimidated,” he said.  “My movement is an initiative to oppose the widespread corruption and opportunism in our politics. We will try to mobilise public support against corrupt leaders and the parties that provide them electoral platforms,” he added.

Gill said the country’s police force has been largely politicised as it served the interests of politicians keen to win elections by whatever means possible. He said even though the Supreme Court had decreed that the police force be insulated from political interference, new legislation was being brought in to replace the old Police Act of 1891. “What is needed is enforcement of the old Act rather than distorting it,” he added.  b_ajay@dnaindia.net
