Malaika Arora Khan’s fans will get more than the regular five minute item song to soak their eyes in as her forthcoming film EMI marks her first film as an actor.

It was 1998 when Malaika stormed on the Bollywood scene with her  dance number Chaiya Chaiya in the film Dil Se that had Shah Rukh Khan playing the lead. The song shot on a moving train went on to become a big hit and Malaika’s performance in it was widely appreciated.

However, after that Malaika didn’t sign a film but emerged as the number one pin up girl in the industry. When quizzed about what took her a decade to sign a film as a heroine Malaika says,  “It is true that everybody thought after Dil Se I would  get into acting but I was doing so much as a model, VJ and other things that I never felt the need to act in a film. I never planned a film career. I had got good offers but I didn’t take them up. EMI just happened out of the blue and it’s been a fun experience,” she says.

Malaika adds, “It is nice that I’m doing something more than what people have seen me getting into  all these years. It is not just a special appearance. It is a nice role if not a large one. I’m paired opposite Arjun Rampal. I play the character of Nancy who’s very cool, hip and loves the good life. To get all this she doesn’t even mind taking credit. It has been a different experience for me.”

So, will she sign  more films? “Let’s see how it goes. If I get some very cool offers then I will certainly look forward to doing them,” she says.

Malaika is one of the most established dancers the industry. No one can forget her sexy numbers in films like Kaal, Kaante and the more recent Welcome.

“There are lots of good dancers around but I think what has worked  in my favour is that I have been very selective. I have only worked for big banners or big star cast films. My USP has been to be different with my acts always,” she adds.

Malaika and her hubby Arbaaz Khan hit their career’s lowest point earlier this year when a promotional ploy for a cosmetic brand went haywire and it was reported that she and Arbaaz are splitting. The news proved to be untrue and the couple faced lot of flak from the media. “We don’t want to go that route again. We will never rely on a bunch of PR driven people. We have put it behind us,” she signs off.
