NEW DELHI: Prime minister Manmohan Singh promised on Saturday to clear all doubts about the genuineness of last month’s encounter at Batla House in Delhi.

His assurance came at a meeting with senior Muslim politicians from the Congress. “If people have doubts about what happened, it is our duty to clear those doubts,” he reportedly said. “We must convince and reassure the minorities that everything was done in keeping with the law.”

Singh decried attempts to politicise the incident, saying they would worsen the alienation of Muslims. He said he would consult his cabinet colleagues as well as Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to find a way to allay misgivings about the encounter.

It, however, appears unlikely that the prime minister will set up a judicial inquiry despite the clamour for it. A government source said he may share details of the communications between terrorists and the two youths shot dead in Batla House.
Another option is to set up a committee to examine available evidence.

Worried about the political fallout of Muslim anger with the government, Singh reminded the delegation that the UPA had done much more for minority welfare than any previous government.
