BANGALORE: India's science and technology capital is all set to get another institution of scientific excellence. The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday approved land for the setting up of the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences on the outskirts of Bangalore city.

The centre to be set up by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has been allocated 19.13 acres of land at Shivakote village near Hesaraghatta.

"The TIFR had sought 35 to 40 acres of land for the purpose. However, we have cleared 19.13 acres now and additional land would be made available if needed on a long term lease of Rs100 per year," minister for rural development Shobha Karandlaje told the media after a cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, the Reddy brothers in the cabinet, G Karunakara Reddy and G Janardhana Reddy, succeeded in getting the recently started government engineering college at Hoovina Hadagali shifted to their bailwick of Bellary.

The cabinet on Thursday approved the shifting of the college, which was started in 2007 following efforts from the then home minister M P Prakash in his constituency of Hoovina Hadagali.

"The government was forced to shift the college due to the poor response for admission from the students. Only 45 students enrolled here in the academic year 2007-08 and the number further went down during this academic year to 40," Shobha said.

The minister denied any political motive behind the move.

Gadag, Srirangapatna, Nagamangala and Shiralakoppa would get new government diploma colleges as the cabinet approved an initial fund of Rs 9.60 crore for their construction during this year.

Another Rs 8 crore was approved for diploma colleges at Ramanagara, Belur, Holenarasipur and Mirle. These four colleges had been cleared by the previous JD(S)-BJP government.
