JAMMU: Foiling fifth infiltration bid in less than a week along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir, army troops have shot dead a militant in an encounter along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district and forced others to flee back.

Giving details of the infiltration bid, a senior army official said that a group of 3-4 militants entered the Indian territory from across the LoC in Peer Badeshwar forward area of Keri sub-sector of the district late on Wednesday night.

"Alert troops guarding the LoC laid a cordon in the area and launched a search operation during which the gunbattle erupted," he said.

A militant was killed in the gunfight, while others fled back taking benefit of darkness.

"There is an increase in infiltration attempts from across the border as last last week recorded four infiltration bids. But alert troops have foiled the attempts. This shows desperation in militant leadership in Pakistan to send in more militants in view of the coming assembly elections," he said.

Of the five infiltration bids foiled in the past one week, a militant was killed along the LoC in Kanchi post in Poonch district on October 14.

It was followed by another infiltration bid and killing of an ultra in Noushera belt in Rajouri district on October 13. Same day, another bid was foiled in Poonch district.

One more militant was killed on October 11 in Keri forward area in Rajouri district.

Army and BSF have further beefed up security along the LoC and IB in Jammu and Kashmir following intelligence reports that large number of militants were planning to enter the state.

Over 131 infiltration bids were reported in the last 10 months from Pakistan in which over 70 militants were killed.
