Electricity consumers across the state, who suffer long hours of load-shedding while Mumbai enjoys almost uninterrupted supply, have a reason to cheer. Nearly 100mw of power from unit 8 of Tata Power Company (TPC), which was to be distributed in Mumbai, will now be diverted to the rest of the state, especially to Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune.

The unit in Trombay, to be commissioned in a month, will generate 250mw of electricity, of which 100mw will be supplied to the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and 50mw to the distribution arm of the company.

The remaining 100mw, as mentioned in TPC’s tariff petition submitted to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (Merc), will be set aside for merchant trading. This means that the trading wing of Tata Power - the Tata Power Trading Company Limited (TPTCL) - will be free to trade this power at the power exchange.

The trading company has also been appointed as franchisee to meet the power requirements of consumers in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune. The areas require 350mw every day, and the current shortfall is 100mw.

If these areas receive 100mw from TPTCL, it will resolve the power crisis, an industry source said. Consumers in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune are anyway getting costly power, at Rs6 to Rs8 a unit. If TPTCL offers a better bargain, it will be possible to get 100mw of power, ensuring uninterrupted supply to consumers in these areas, the source said.

Mumbai’s suburbs would have got the 100mw at a cheaper rate if Reliance Infrastructure had entered into an agreement with TPC. The Tatas have agreed to sell power generated from unit 8 at Rs2.83 per unit, as against Rs9 per unit for trading the power.

A TPC spokesperson confirmed the tariff petition submitted to Merc.
