CHANDIGARH: Punjab DGP NPS Aulakh has expressed serious concern at the “increasing involvement of security guards in incidents of crime” and directed ADGP (security) Anil Kaushik to conduct physical verification of guards before assigning them jobs.

The directive comes after two security guards attached to Vigilance Bureau SP Shiv Kumar in Patiala were found to be involved in a diamond robbery.

Before that, another Punjab Police guard attached to an MLA was found to be involved in a firing in Mumbai, in which security guards of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim Singh had gunned down a Sikh youth.

In another incident in Ludhiana, the weapon of a gunman was used by a Shiv Sena member to attack his rival.

In the latest incident, the security guards allegedly helped SP Kumar’s son Mohit steal diamonds from Mumbai trader Bhupesh Shah who was traveling in a taxi to Amritsar. One of the guards was arrested with Mohit last Sunday.

Probe revealed four of the seven robbery suspects, including two gunmen, were from Patiala. Even the vehicle used in the crime was hired from the town. DGP Aulakh said it was, however, still to be ascertained whether the vehicle was an official Gypsy.

The DGP made it clear that the police were treating Mohit as the mastermind in the case after the diamonds worth over Rs3 crore were recovered from his Ludhiana house.
Trader Shah had alleged his taxi driver was also involved in the robbery as he “deliberately stopped the car on the roadside just before the robbery occurred”.

In Punjab, having security guards has become a matter of  prestige, with even those VIPs who are not on the threat list making frequent demands for them. According to an official estimate, over 10% of the Punjab Police force serves as security men, despite the fact that the state has not witnessed even a single militant attack on an individual in the last 12 years.
