BANGALORE: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) has now taken up the responsibility of developing lakes in and around Bangalore city.

The agency would develop 29 lakes in the first phase of the programme.

There are about 278 big lakes each spread over 40 hectares and more and 1400 small lakes each spread over an area lesser than 40 hectares in and around Bangalore.

The BWSSB would take up the development of small lakes under the first phase of the programme. It would take up works like desilting and maintaining the quality of the water, BWSSB, IT and BT minister Katta Subramanya Naidu told the media here on Friday.

The Lake Development Authority (LDA) had been taking care of these lakes till now and the BWSSB would take over the responsibility of the lakes after discussing the issue with chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, he said.

Referring to the delay in announcing the government's policy on regularizing unauthorized layouts, sites purchased in such layouts and violation of sanctioned building plans (Akrama-Sakrama), the minister said that a suitable decision that would not be a burden on common man would be taken very soon.
