With Navratri just a week away, everybody is busy preparing for the nine-day fest. The shiny, lustrous stick-on tattoos are new accessories that have caught the fancy of the enthusiastic lot.

Bigger than the usual bindis, these temporary tattoos are available in various styles and designs. They are designed depending on the client's choice. Youngsters like to get tattoos done on their arms, back, nails, ankles and navel.

Arvind Chadva, owner of Classic Bindis said, "In Mumbai, the demand for these tattoos is increasing every year. Earlier this craze was prevalent only in Gujarat. People don't mind experimenting with various designs." He further revealed that the price range of arm tattoos start at Rs 30 and go on till Rs 400 depending on the size and amount of work done. The usual zardosi designs are still much preferred.

Traditional tattoos — with a boy and girl playing dandiya in traditional wear — are also in great demand. These tattoos are made of tiny sequins, pipes, buttons, balls, pearls etc. People are also opting for huge stones embedded within the tattoos.

Most people like to match their tattoos with their garb. Rashmi Barot, a Bandra resident said, "The tattoos with stones embedded in them look awesome and go well bit the Victorian jewellery. I have a red chaniya choli for which I have big red stone set and a similiar stones tattoo for my arm looks just apt for it.” She bought it from the nearby market. “One has to look hard for them as very few people keep these tattoos and the range is a limited one."

"Further, there are single line tattoos, which can be stuck on any part of the body, right from your arm or the back. Also the round, big tattoos can be used as bindis or for the navel too. And, guess what? Tattoos are not restricted to girls alone. Young boys also sport tattoos on their wrists, while a few show them off on their neck," said a Malad-based tattoo designer.

While black, yellow and red are the preferred colours this season, sparkle and bling are the most significant part of the tattoos; after all, Navratri is a glittery affair. These tattoos add up to that bling factor as they are very lustrous and shiny. With the stones, pearls and artificial diamonds studded in them, they look even more glorious. Many vendors also take orders for customised tattoos but take three to five days to deliver, depending on the size and work of the tattoo.

For those who are not into wearing traditional chaniya cholis, these shimmering tattoos make up for the look. Explains Shweta Ved, a Borivali resident, "You can just wear a short sleeveless kurti on a capri trouser and still sport tattoos on your ankle and arm. While dragon and sun tattoos go well with western outfits, stone and bead embedded tattoos look equally glamorous too." The dragon tattoos are just for one time use while the other tattoos can be re-used again depending on the quality of glue.
So match your tattoos with your attire and get ready to groove!
