BANGALORE: Karnataka will soon get its 30th district. The B S Yeddyurappa government on Friday announced its decision to carve a new district out of the existing Gulbarga district.

The new district will be named after its headquarters, Yadgir.

The decision was taken at a State Cabinet meeting held in Gulbarga.

The Cabinet also decided that a high-power authority would be constituted to oversee the implementation of the D M Nanjundappa report on eradicating regional imbalances.

Demanding that Centre accord special status to the Hyderabad-Karnatak region, the Cabinet announced liberal grants for developing infrastructure in the backward region.

A beaming chief minister, B S Yeddyurappa, told newspersons later that the head of the new authority to monitor the implementation of the Nanjundappa committee will be accorded the rank of a cabinet minister. A prominent leader will soon be selected for the post, he added.

He observed that one of the long pending demands of the people in Gulbarga district, was the creation of Yadgir district. A committee headed by revenue minister G Karunakara Reddy would finalise the taluks to be included in the new district.

The committee has been asked to submit within a month its report outlining the road map for implementing the decision.

An all-party delegation from Karnataka would soon be taken to Delhi to convince the prime minister and the president about the need for bestowing special status to the Hyderabad Karnatak region.

"We will demand that Article 371 of the Constitution be amended to provide for region-based reservation in employment and higher education for the people of Hyderabad Karnatak," he added.

The Centre has shown similar gesture to Vidarbha region in Maharashtra, Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh and Kutch and Saurashtra regions in Gujarat, he pointed out.

The meeting also cleared various projects and programmes to improve education facilities, road and rail connectivity, power and health services in Gulbarga, Bijapur, Bidar, Bagalkot, Koppal, Raichur, Chitradurga, Bellary and Chamarajanagar districts which have been identified by the Nanjundappa committee as the most backward districts..
