The Indian Mujahideen would have done a recce to identify unsecured WiFi internet connections in the city for sending the terror e-mail, the Mumbai police said on Monday.

The terror group had sent an e-mail to security agencies and media houses on Saturday, claiming responsibility for the Delhi blasts and warning of terror attacks in Mumbai.
The police traced the e-mail to the internet protocol (IP) address of a company, Kamran Power Control Pvt Ltd, run by a Chembur businessman, KM Kamath.

The Mumbai police believe a recce was done because they found two other unsecured WiFi interent connections in the vicinity. “If there had been any problem in sending the e-mail by hacking into the company’s internet service, the group would have had other WiFi networks to hack into,” a senior police officer said, not wanting to be named.

Also, without planning, it would not have been possible for the group to leave its stamp - of warning security agencies before an attack - on the Delhi blasts, the officer said.

This is the third e-mail to be sent by the group by gaining access to unsecured WiFi connections. On July 26, an e-mail was sent through the WiFi network used by American national Kenneth Haywood. The second e-mail, on August 23, was sent from the WiFi connection of the computer lab at Khalsa College.

The e-mails have left the police flummoxed. They are still clueless about who sent them. Their main suspect is Abdul Subhan Qureshi, alias Tauqeer, a techie with expertise in software maintenance.

“Tauqeer’s name had first come up during investigations of the July 11 blasts. He surely occupies an important position in the group’s hierarchy,” joint commissioner of police (crime), Rakesh Maria, said. “We have learnt that he had visited Assam for indoctrination,” he said.
