Demo seeking release of Muslim prisoners

COIMBATORE: A group of Muslims on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Central Jail here demanding release of about 70 prisoners, undergoing sentence in connection with the 1998 Coimbatore serial blast cases and served more than 10 years prison term, police said.
   
The group, under the banner of the Charitable Trust for Minorities, claimed that these prisoners, belonging to Muslim community and senteced for 10 years term and above, have already served more than seven years and were eligible to be released as per the Government order on the occasion of 100th birth centenary of C N Annadurai.
   
Senior district and police officials, who rushed to the spot received a memorandum from the trust, to be forwarded to the Government, police said.
   
When contacted Jail and police officials said that those sentenced under Explosives and Arms act were not entitled for the release.
   
A total of 296 prisoners of Coimbatore Central Prison are eligible to be released, they said.
