CHENNAI: After reducing the price of PDS rice from Rs two to Re one per kg, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Saturday said he will announce more sops for the poor and middle classes on October 2.
"I am sorry that I cannot disclose what the scheme would be. It is aimed at benefiting the middle class and poorer sections of the society," Karunanidhi said at a function here organised to distribute cash relief to a few film technicians.
The DMK government's move to launch a slew of sops for the electorate has been seen as an attempt to gear up for the next Lok Sabha polls.
"The scheme would come into force from October 2, the Gandhi Jayanthi, a day which is as important to us as C N Annadurai's birth anniversary," Karunanidhi said.
He said any leader who has worked for the betterment of the people is dear to his party which is why he has announced as Education Day the birth anniversary of Congress leader and former CM, the late K Kamaraj.
Referring to criticism by Opposition parties of the Re one kg rice scheme, Karunanidhi said it has been praised by actress Khushboo. "I am happy there are some persons in the state who appreciate (the scheme)," he said in a lighter vein.
