Bride import for love-sick bachelors
A skewed sex ratio has forced government officials in Serbia to think of importing 250,000 brides for the country’s frustrated bachelors. Social services chiefs are already in talks with neighbours like the Ukraine, Moldova and Russia and with Far Eastern countries like Vietnam, Burma and Cambodia. There are 250,000 unmarried love-sick young men in Serbian villages who would like to get married. Officials feel there is potential in brides from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam as they have a tradition of bearing children and are also good at agricultural work. Women, it seems, haven’t really graduated from being child-bearing machines and field workers even in the 21st century in this part of the world.
