NEW DELHI: What seemed like a never-ending legal battle might conclude on Tuesday as a local court is scheduled to pronounce judgment in the infamous BMW hit-and-run case in which seven people, including two policemen, were killed on the morning of January 10, 1999. The driver was drunk son of a top businessman.

The case has seen many ups and downs. The public prosecutor and the defence counsel were caught on camera in a sting operation offering money to the sole eyewitness to change his statement before the court so that Sanjeev Nanda, the accused, could be bailed out.

Interestingly, when the case was opened in the court and the legal tussle had just begun, two of the three crucial eyewitnesses decided to change their statements and turn hostile. The hostile witnesses told the court that it was not a car that ran over the seven people but a “truck-like vehicle”.

The third eyewitness Sunil Kulkarni has changed his stand at least seven times. Kulkarni was earlier not included in the trial because he was found to be unreliable by the investigating cops, but the court decided in March 2007 to call him back to depose against Nanda.
