MUMBAI: Around 500 Christian-run educational institutes and organisations in Maharashtra, including 150 convent schools in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad falling under the Bombay Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE), remained close on Friday to protest against attacks on Christians in Orissa.

At least 15 people have been killed so far in the violence triggered by the murder of VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his disciples by suspected Maoists.
In all, around 45,000 schools run by Christian organisations remained closed across the country on Friday.

Gregory Lobo, the secretary of ABE, said, “The bandh was peaceful in most parts of the city. All the exams were rescheduled. We hope the government takes immediate action after our protest.”

A spokesperson from the Ryan group of schools said “we have requested all our 110 Ryan educational institutions to remain closed on Friday” as a sign of solidarity with the  Christians in Orissa.

Joseph Dias, general secretary of the Catholic Secular Forum, said, “Our delegation also met the governor.” Dias said the forum would resort to agitation if the Orissa government didn't take action against the “fundamentalists”.
