The institute will unveil the book chronicling its 50 years

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Bombay will unveil the coffee table book chronicling its history on September 5. The institute, in its golden jubilee year, has documented its history for the first time. Written by one of its faculties, Rohit Manchanda, Monastery, Sanctuary, Laboratory narrates the not-so-popular incidents that IITians have witnessed in the past 50 years.

The award-winning author enjoyed meeting faculty and alumni who were a part of the institute’s formative years. “I have taken help from archival sources, which were limited. It took two years for me to write the book. It was difficult to hunt down retired staff,” said Manchanda.

Manchanda said he came across several startling facts like the canteen being used as a venue for board meetings and annual share-holders gatherings. The institute had also conducted an online survey for students, staff, and faculty to get some interesting first-hand experiences. “The book has mention of the bad phase that students have gone through in the 1970s and 80s. Even the living conditions in the institute were unbearable. However, IITians have bravely faced such situations,” he said.

“The authorities had to shut down the institute for two weeks in March 1980 for the first time ever, when the academic sessions were on in full swing. The institute had gone through its ups and down. However, this was a very unique case, where the director had to forcibly (with the help of police) shut the campus following protests from students and mess-workers, over different issues,” said Manchanda.

The book is divided into four parts—Chance and Design: Conception and Birth of IIT-Bombay, The Bejewelled Setting, Time Capsule: IIT-B Along the Decades, and Stories Within the Stories: A Thematic Look at IIT-B’s Evolution. Published by Macmillan India, it will also carry photographs of historical interest, including several contributed by the alumni. The institute also plans to sell the copies internationally and will request its alumni to help them in liaisons.
