The underprivileged school students in and around Kalina looking for help with their lessons, can now tune into radio for assistance. Mumbai University students have recorded lessons from textbooks, which are being broadcast through the varsity’s FM channel — Must Radio.

The community radio channel, launched by president Pratibha Patil on February 29, is airing lessons played out by university students in an entertaining format for the students who cannot afford tuition or have illiterate parents. “The idea to help students through teaching on air was given to us by the Department of Journalism and Communication. The students come here during their free time and record the lessons to be aired in the evening,” said Natasha Menon, RJ, Must Radio.

Broadcast on 107.8 MHz, the community channel has a 20-member team that records the lessons in Hindi, English and Marathi. “The recorded programme is aired between 7pm to 9pm,” said Pankaj Athavale, station co-ordinator, Must FM.

“The department students have converted all the textbooks of the state board syllabus from Stds. V to X. This will also provide exposure to media students who will get an opportunity to be radio jockeys,” said Sanjay Ranade, head of department, Communication and Journalism, Mumbai University.

Another RJ, Charuta  Sawant, who is pursuing her MBA has been recording textbooks of Std VI with RJ Amit Dwivedi in her spare time. “We ask the students on how to make the lessons interesting. They call us up and give suggestions on making it into a play or drama. Reciting poetry or making it into a story gets their interest,” said Sawant.

Not just this, school children can also call the channel on 26525366/67 to talk to the RJs. “We get several calls from students asking us to record a particular lesson. At present, the channel reaches out to around 50,000 people. With a stronger transmitter, we will soon widen our coverage to all of Mumbai,” said Dwivedi.
