Shabana Azmi says Indian democracy is unfair to Muslims. And that there is discrimination. That is why she and Javed Akhtar cannot buy a Mumbai house because they are Muslims and scared that the Kashmir crisis could create problems between Hindus and Muslims elsewhere in the country.
“I can see that happening”. She told the CNN-IBN programme Devil’s Advocate
“That’s why I am so distressed”. In an interview to be broadcast at 8.30 pm today, Azmi said that Indian politics has said despite India’s secularism Muslims are victims of discrimination.
She said. “I wanted to buy a flat in Bombay and it wasn’t given to me because I was a Muslim. I read the same about Saif. Now, I mean, if Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi cannot get a flat in Bombay because they are Muslims, then what are we talking about.?”
Azmi said she viewed “with exasperation, anger, hurt and bewilderment” the way the West looked upon Islam as a threat and treated Muslims with fear and hate.
