Criminal shot dead in Meerut

MEERUT: A dreaded criminal was on Thursday shot dead by police here following an encounter.
    
A team of Special Operations Group (SOG) chased and gunned down Jahangir, who had allegedly robbed Rs 4.5 lakh from a scrap trader of Shikohabad four days ago,Superintendent of Police Rural Arvind Sen said.
    
Jahangir had several cases against him including that of murder, loot and dacoity and spelled terror in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttrakhand, Sen said.
    
The accused along with four of his aides were going to Hapur when a police party intercepted the gang and challenged them. Two out of the four motorcycle borne youths managed to escape and the remaining two fired at police who retaliated in which Jahangir was killed while his aide managed to flee.
    
Some cash, a .9 mm American pistol and a motorcycle was recovered from his possession, the SP said, adding a hunt is on to nab rest of the gang members.
