The BMC has said that its proposed Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) service will be terror proof.

Additional municipal commissioner Anil Diggikar said, “The BMC will ensure that the WiFi system is hacker-proof and is not misused for terror activity. We will decide on a strict regime of registration, logging, authentication and monitoring.”

The BMC will provide WiFi service to Mumbaiites with the help of Science and Technology Park, University of Pune. It aims to provide basic amenities to citizens through its intranet.

“It is virtually impossible to tap the contents in air. All the data will be protected by latest security services. They will also protect the subscriber accounts from being hacked. Intrusion detection and prevention system will be provided as E-services,” Diggikar said.

Diggkar said BMC will encourage choice of appropriate technology, among other considerations and ensure reliability, stability and security. There will be clear separation of internet and intranet.

Jitendra Shah, IT Consultant for BMC, said, “The BMC will have all security measures in place. But it is the users’ responsibility to make sure that their accounts are properly locked.”

With the implementation of this technology, Mumbai will be at par with cities like Philadelphia, Huston and Chicago.
