AHMEDABAD: The growing number of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in India is now a matter of concern for all intelligence agencies in the country, including the state intelligence apparatus of Gujarat. The Bangladeshi population here is the easiest prey for terrorist groups looking for cheap labour which can be recruited for dangerous assignments.

According to sources, intelligence agencies are worried that, in the next two or three years, the rising sea level will swallow the land of many Bangladeshis living close to the sea and force them to illegally migrate to the country.

Intelligence agencies estimated the illegal Bangla- deshi population in the country to be around 5 crore; which is expected to double in the next two-three years, said sources.
Gujarat police sources said there are over 1 lakh illegal Bangladesh immigrants in Ahmedabad.

Intelligence agencies believe that the so-called Indian Mujahideen had used over 200 of its cadres to carry out bombings in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Surat. A large number of these cadres were Bangladeshis. Sources said a growing number of Bangladeshis were now involved in terrorist activities, not only in India, but all over the world. Bangladeshis are now known to be involved in subversive activities in places as far as Afghanistan and other conflict zones in the world.

Once a liberal society, Bangladesh has been gradually transformed into a fundamentalist one over the last decade. A senior intelligence source said India is heading towards a security nightmare as the large population of illegal immigrants coming into the country from extremely fundamentalist societies will make it impossible for security agencies to keep a track of anti-Indian elements in the country. “Living as we are in such a hostile neighbourhood, we should be ready for many more Ahmedabads and Jaipurs,” the source said.

The intelligence agencies said the influence of Ban-gladeshi terrorist groups, mentored by Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence, is evident in the low-intensity blasts carried out by the Indian Mujahideen. “The bla- sts were similar to the 100 low-intensity ones carried out by extremist organisations in Bangladesh in 2005. After the blasts, Bangla authorities had come across and defused more than 300 bombs across the country,” the source added.
