AURANGABAD: Despite strong opposition from Marathi literary circles across Maharashtra, chairman of Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal (apex Marathi literary body) Kautikrao Thale-Patil declared on Thursday night that he would go ahead with the plan to hold a three-day World Marathi Literary Conference at San Jose near San Francisco from February 14, 2009.

The planning committee of the Mahamandal on Thursday here overlooked the stiff opposition from various literary bodies and decided to hold its first ever literary conference in America.

The committee has decided not to organise the All India Marathi Conference this year in Maharashtra. It is the first time in the 82-year history of the Mahamandal that the conference would not be organised in the state.

Thale-Patil said of the 19 members of the Mahamandal’s executive body, 17 wanted Bay Area Marathi Sahitya Mandal of United States. Thale-Patil, while trying to convince his opponents said if Telugu, Hindi and Gujarati literary conferences can be organised at world level, then the Marathi body too can do it.

The Vidarbha Sahitya Mandal and other units affiliated to the Mahamandal had opposed the idea of holding the conference in America. During the planning committee meeting, three representatives of the Sammelan headed by Dr Shripad Joshi raised the issue saying it would be against the Mahamandal’s constitution.

Further, Joshi took objection to the presence of three members, including Sandeep Devkule of the Bay Area Maharashtra Mandal from America in
the meeting.

He was even demanding that Mahamandal should not give affiliation to the American Mandal. However, Thale-Patil did not concede to his demands. Joshi, Manohar Mhaisalkar and Shobha Ubgade then boycotted the meeting.

Thale-Patil said that the conference, however, will not be treated as the 82nd sammelan. But the demand to hold the 82nd sammelan has not been considered.

The Mahamandal has decided to hold the World Marathi Literary Conference every ten years, and every time when the world conference takes place, no sammelan will held that year.
