Hospitals at the heart of terror

Civil and LG hospitals bore the brunt of the blasts even as the injured and their relatives were being brought in by the minute 

AHMEDABAD: There couldn't have been a nightmare worse than this. The bomb blast victims being rushed to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation managed LG Hospital realised to their utter horror that terror had followed them when a car parked near the hospital blew up. The car was believed to be that of a doctor and the bomb was planted under the car.

One victim Girish Chauhan, who lost consciousness following the blast, later recalled seeing the car going up in flames. “I had gone to relieve myself near the LG hospital, when I heard a blast behind my back. I turned around to see a Maruti car being thrown up in the air. Then I fell unconscious,” said Chauhan. “I later woke up to find myself severely injured and in pain,” Chauhan told DNA.


Meanwhile, chaos prevailed at the VS Hospital as the injured and their relatives crowded the corridors to get medical attention. Witnesses said an injured was being brought in every 2 minutes. Mukesh Prajapati, 28, was injured on his way back home in Bhav ni Pol in Raipur. “I was passing by a medical store on my cycle and suddenly heard a blast. The next thing I knew was a searing pain in my back,” said Prajapati.  He was rushed to the VS hospital for treatment.

State ministers and AMC honchos also made their customary visit to the VS Hospital inquiring about the well-being of the injured. Revenue minister Anandiben Pate, Narhari Amin, Saurabh Patel, Union minister for textile Shakersinh Vaghela were among those who visited the VS Hospital.  “The situation is under control. The state had no inkling about the bomb blast. If we knew, it would have never happened,” said Anandiben Patel. Another victim Pradeep Parekh (22) was injured in a bomb blast in Raipur Chakla near a Vadilal ice cream shop. “I was standing on a road and was witness to the blast which occurred from below a bench placed near the ice cream shop,” said Parekh. Minister of state for industries and power Saurabh Patel said,”The chief minister will soon make an official state about the incident.” Security has been tightened all over the city and the railways say they are checking each and ever passenger.
