After suffering from multiple miscarriages, Delna Sangvi decided to try the natural way, and delivered her sons at home

At a time when delivering at a hospital was the norm, my family and I decided to have my babies at home. I had multiple miscarriages before I had my first baby and it was emotionally very taxing.

I was growing tired of the medications. When I conceived again, I was practicing yoga religiously and also taking care of my diet. It was only in the sixth month that I decided to go it solo. I started reading a lot about pregnancy and natural births. Normally I would lose a baby in the sixth or seventh month, but this time my pregnancy lasted beyond the seventh month and my faith in natural birth increased. I also got my husband to read a lot and he was very supportive.

My in-laws were a hesitant but were supportive of my decision. Friends advised me to pay up at a hospital just in case of an emergency but I decided against it. I went into labour on a Friday evening, but I did not deliver until Monday morning. A friend knew of a midwife, Sitabai, from Vashi, who had helped her during her delivery. She arrived early Monday morning.
I was lying in a bathtub, and Sitabai told me that I was not getting the contractions because lying in the tub was relaxing my muscles. She was a great help, and I delivered the baby at 7am.

So when I conceived again, I decided to have my second baby at home as well. There was no tension or stress and it seemed like such a normal thing. I gave my elder son, Shariq, his dinner, at about 11pm. I delivered my second son that night, and in the morning I served Shariq his breakfast.

I did not have to be away at the hospital and there was no disruption in my routine life. There was no incision or tear from the delivery. I would attribute this to the sweeping and mopping I did till the last trimester. The duck walk you need to do while sweeping, mopping opens up the vaginal passage, easing the delivery.

These days so many women are opting for a C-section, but this is unnecessary.
