Argument about overtaking at toll naka sparked attack

VASHI: An argument about overtaking claimed the life of a youth who was stabbed to death by occupants of a Ford Ikon near the Vashi toll naka on Friday afternoon.

The Vashi police, who have registered a case against unknown persons, later brought in three people for questioning. No arrests were, however, made till late on Friday night.

The victim, Raju, was in a taxi along with two of his friends when the Ford Ikon, on its way from Mumbai towards Pune, tried to overtake them around 2.30 pm, according to the police.

An angry Raju, police said, gestured to them to pull over. Enraged, the occupants of the Ford Ikon stopped right in front of the taxi, forcing it to pull over, police said.

“They dragged Raju (around 25 years) and his friends out of the taxi and an argument ensued. Soon a scuffle broke out between them and one of the occupants of the Ford Ikon stabbed Raju with a sharp object. Whether it was a screwdriver or a knife only the post mortem report — expected on Saturday — will tell,” said senior inspector Sudhir Chaugule.

He said both the taxi driver and the accused sped away, leaving a bleeding Raju and his friends behind.

“Raju’s friends contacted the toll naka traffic police and a constable (Yelkar) rushed him to Vashi municipal hospital, where he was declared dead,” said Chaugule.

A traffic police official posted at the Vashi toll naka said Raju was stabbed with a screwdriver. And while the Vashi police didn’t divulge details about the car, a traffic policeman posted in the area said: “The number of the Ford Ikon that we got from the toll naka is MH-45-G 0077 and the colour is white.”

According to eyewitnesses, Raju was carrying paintings with him and is believed to be an artist.

When DNA visited the police station, Raju’s friends and their parents were there but were not willing to talk to the media. Even the police refused to give out details about the accused. “No details can be given out because the investigations are still on,” said Chaugule.

Confirming that they had registered a case against unknown persons, the Vashi police said one of the three brought in for questioning was not involved in the incident. Also, the person who actually stabbed Raju was still at large,  police said..
