He loots money from car dealer’s flat with help of friends; his girlfriend was to be the partner

A 20-year-old BPO employee who wanted to start a garments business with his girlfriend was arrested on Thursday for selling his soul to the devil. Two of his friends have also been arrested. The three have been accused of stealing Rs1 crore from the Khar residence of a businessman.

They splurged most of the money on foreign prostitutes and in hotels in Goa, the police said.

The police have also arrested a 29-year-old woman for allegedly pointing out the flat the youths should target.

Suraj Hadawle, 20, is an employee of a BPO firm in Malad, the police said. His friends - Alan Merchant, 21, and Valentine Vincent Jacinto, 20 - are bartenders and live in Kalina, while Varsha Kolekar, 29, is a resident of Kanjur Marg.

On October 27 last year, the three youths broke into the fifth-floor flat of Ajay Bajaj, 49, in Diego Building in Khar (w). In the FIR lodged with the Khar police, Bajaj, who does business in imported cars, said Rs5 lakh was stolen from his house.

On Thursday, the police were tipped off that the three youths would be in Goregaon for a drive. The police found the three in Valentine’s car on SV Road and arrested them around 12pm. The three have confessed to their involvement in the robbery, joint commissioner of police (crime) Rakesh Maria said.

Suraj and his girlfriend Sabina Anthony Elmo of Chimabi village in Bandra (w) wanted to start a garment business, but they didn’t have the money, Maria said. Sabina asked for Rs50,000 from her friend Varsha. But Varsha’s husband demanded surety. When Suraj and Sabina could not furnish any, Varsha told Suraj that she knew of a person who had the money. She told him that Bajaj had borrowed Rs5 lakh from her and was refusing to repay the amount. Suraj would have the capital for his business if he stole money from Bajaj’s residence, Varsha told him.

On October 23, Varsha showed Bajaj’s flat to Suraj, Alan and Valentine and also told them that Bajaj employed a domestic help and that he kept the keys to his safe under his pillow. She also told them that Bajaj took a nap in the afternoon.

On October 27, the three entered the building from the rear gate and went to Baja’s flat. They assaulted the domestic help, Harilal Yadav, when he opened the door. They also hit Bajaj, who was asleep, on his head with the lid of a pressure cooker, the police said. They then stole money from the safe, stuffed it in seven plastic bags and fled to Sabina’s residence in an auto, Maria said.

To their surprise, they found they had stolen Rs1.1 crore. The amount was then shared between Varsha (Rs40 lakh), Suraj (Rs14 lakh), Valentine (Rs18 lakh), Allan (Rs18 lakh), and Sabina (Rs10 lakh). They gave Rs10 lakh to Sabina’s sister Delilah, who helped them count the booty, Maria said.

“Varsha later told them that Bajaj did not owe her any money. She said she had once worked at his residence as a domestic help and knew that he kept huge amount of money in his safe,” Maria said. “She cooked up the false story to win the confidence of the three youths,” he said.

Suraj, Alan and Valentine then left for Goa telling their families that they have found jobs there. They stayed in Goa for three months and spent lakhs on Russian and Filipino prostitutes and in bars. They also purchased second-hand cars, Maria said.

The police have seized the cars and Rs10 lakh from Varsha, who was once arrested in a robbery case in Malad in 2005. “We are on the lookout for Sabina and Delilah, who are believed to have started a car business in Goa with the stolen money,” said Maria.
