NEW DELHI: With the government appearing to have been saved from collapse, the BJP, already in election mode, condemned the Samajwadi Party-Congress deal as crass political opportunism.

“The BJP is deeply concerned over the political theatre of the absurd being played in Delhi designed to save the tottering UPA government,” said party spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The BJP focused its attack on government’s failures and the new alliance. “Inflation is at 11.63% and instead of taking effective steps to contain price rise, we see the worst kind of opportunism. The very existence of UPA was the result of political negativism with no other common ground,” said Prasad.

“Samajwadi Party’s declared opposition to dynastic politics is suddenly replaced by the alleged larger danger of the BJP and an apology given for preventing Sonia Gandhi from becoming prime minister in 1998. This is political opportunism at its worst,” he fumed.
