While the revocation of the land transfer order sparked instant celebrations in Kashmir and prompted the Hurriyat-led action committee against land transfer to withdraw  call for further protests from Wednesday, it escalated violence in Jammu.

Curfew was clamped in sensitive areas of the J&K winter capital after protesters clashed with police injuring over 70.

Police had to open fire when protests turned violent in the Muthi area on Tuesday morning.

Violence also spread to Khatua, Udhampur, Kaluchak, Domaina and several other areas with protestors pelting stones and burning police posts.

People burnt tyres on roads blocking the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Effigies of several PDP and Congress leaders were also set ablaze. Congress MP Lal Singh had to face the wrath of the people at Samba where police used smoke shells and cane charge to disperse the mob.  

Curfew was clamped in Nawabag, Domania, Janipora and Bakshi Nagar.

Inspector general of police, Jammu, KR Kumar said 200 people had been arrested. “Thirty cops, including SP (north) Sanjay Kotwal, were injured in clashes with people,” he said.
