Radioactive waste mixed with water enters into village

JAMSHEDPUR: Following complaints that water from an inundated pond containing radioactive waste has entered Talsa village near here, the Uranaium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) on Monday said water samples from the village were being tested.

The UCIL admitted the spill over but said there was no threat to life due to radiation.

Owing to record 338.1 mm rainfall on June 17, maximum in the past six decades, radioactive waste from the tailing pond of Turamdih uranium mines on the outskirt of the steel city of Jamshedpur has reportedly spilled over into the village's ponds and fields.

The spill over was obvious due to the torrential rain as there was no way to contain the water flowing into the village, sources said.

"Yes, there is possibility of spill over of water from tailing pond due to the record rainfall but certainly there is no threat to the lives of the villagers on account of radiation," UCIL spokesman P V Dubey said.

A team of scientists from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre visited the affected village and collected water sample for test, Dubey said.

The initial report did not suggest that the water that entered into the village carried radioactive waste and could endanger human lives, he said.

The scientists were still on the job as UCIL did not want to leave anything to chance, he said.

UCIL has been providing potable water to the villagers in tankers, he said.

Apprehending threat to their lives, the villagers have reportedly stopped fetching water from wells and ponds and had informed the UCIL authorities in this regard.

The UCIL spokesman said a team of experts have been monitoring the radiation level there regularly since June 17.
