The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, has instituted 14 chairs for professors. This is part of the institute’s attempt to recognise existing professors and attract new ones. The chair professors will be paid more than regular professors.

This is one of the initiatives planned by IIT-B to tide over faculty crunch. The institute is short of 100 professors and is looking to increase faculty by 50 per cent over the next five years. “Student numbers will rise by over 50 per cent in the next three years,” said professor Devang Khakhar, dean of faculty. “We are planning to hire at least 300 teachers.”

“Earlier, IIT-B did not have many chairs. Also, the salary was the same as that of any other professor,” said Khakhar.

Khakhar said a chair, which will be given as an honour to existing professors, will include salary, honourarium, and contingency expenses. Two have already been
appointed as chair professors.

Khakhar said more chairs were in the pipeline. “It will motivate existing professors. Also, it will help attract faculty from outside. But the latter will have to join as a professor and then be nominated for the chair,” he said.

Professor DB Phatak, convener of the golden jubilee celebrations committee, said, “We hope to have 50 such chairs and fellowships.” The teachers can be reappointed after three years.
