SRINAGAR: The alleged rape of a four-year-old girl by an 18-year-old student in the remote Pariwan village of Kulgam district has created unrest in the area.

Police have arrested the alleged rapist Mukhtar Khan, a class XI student and a case of rape has been registered against him.

“They are close neighbours in the village. When she was playing, Khan called her to his house and then raped her. She was bleeding profusely and taken to hospital. Doctors attending on her confirmed she has been raped,” said Bashir Ahmad, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Kulgam.

As the news spread, the entire village took to the streets and marched towards Khan’s house. Raising slogans, they even tried to set his house ablaze.

“People were very angry and tried to burn the house down. But we persuaded them no to take law into their hands as it will weaken our case,” the SDPO said. His family has fled the village fearing reprisal from the villagers.

In another case, a widow has alleged sexual assault by an employee in Kupwara which has prompted the deputy commissioner Asfandyar Khan to ask the police to probe the incident.

“I have referred the matter to SSP for further investigation and take suitable action under law,” said Khan.
