NEW DELHI: Veterinary chiefs of SAARC nations on Monday called for coordination among member states in all areas of veterinary sciences to check trans-boundary animal diseases at the beginning of their two-day meet here.

Inaugurating the conference, Animal Husbandry Secretary Pradeep Kumar said that SAARC countries have similar livestock systems and are facing the same problems and it is imperative that they share veterinary information among themselves especially for dealing with trans-boundary diseases.

The SAARC nations -- India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives -- suffer from inadequacies of veterinary infrastructure and shortage of technical power, an official statement said quoting the Secretary.

Noting that sharing of information immediately on the onset of major disease in a country is of paramount importance in checking the spread of the disease, Kumar said: "There is a scope for coordination among SAARC nations in all areas of veterinary science ranging from capacity building, diagnosis and prophylaxis to edidemiology."

The Secretary also called for evolving an action plan to tackle such diseases and offered to share India's expertise and infrastructure facilities to prevent and control bird flu.

He said the diseases should be contained especially when there is steady movement of people and goods across borders.

Chiefs of Veterinary Services from all SAARC Countries are participating in the conference.

The conference is being held after India and Bangladesh were severely hit by bird flu earlier this year. One of the main aims of the conference is to find ways for issuing early warning and sharing information on such diseases.
