The BMC has decided to set up condom vending machines at pubs, bars, hotels, lodges, railway stations and theatres across the city.

The civic body has tied up with an NGO — Hindustan Lattice Family Planning Trust — for this Aids awareness venture. There are plans to install 3,000 machines across the city — 1,500 of which will be set up in the first phase in June.

Additional commissioner Kishore Gajbhiye said, “To get a condom, all one will have to do is to drop a Rs5 coin in the automated machine.”

Tushar Deshmukh, conveynor for the NGO, said, “The National Aids Control Organisation (Naco) is going to provide 11,000 machines for Maharashtra. Mumbai will get 3,000 of those. We, with the help of other NGOs, have identified sites for setting up the machines.”

“These machines will also be there at public toilets, BMC markets, super markets and malls,” he added. “Our aim is to remove the social stigma attached to condom and make it easily accessible to people.”

Prashant Shetty, a Mazgaon bar manager said, “It is a good step to counter Aids.”
