Buoyed by the growing curiosity among commuters about the upcoming Bandra skywalk, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has now decided to construct skywalks at Vile Parle, Goregaon, Lower Parel, Currey Road, Vasai Road, Ambernath, Kandivili and Masjid stations.

MMRDA has entrusted Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) for building these skywalks on priority basis. During the review meeting on Monday, MSRDC informed MMRDA about the corporation tendering the skywalk project on these stations. “MSRDC has assured us that it will start construction by September after appointing consultants and the contractor,” MMRDA spokesman Dilip Kawathkar said.

According to Kawathkar, railway authorities were also co-operating in finalising the stations and surrounding areas for skywalk construction. MSRDC would construct a total of 18 skywalks in the city. The corporation is co-ordinating with the railways and the metropolitan administration to finalise the list of next 10 stations.

In an earlier development, metropolitan commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad said some of the proposed skywalks would be suspension bridges. The consultant appointed by MMRDA identified Parel, Virar, Kurla, Kanjurmarg and Andheri stations for such skywalks. Gaikwad said construction of most of its 50 skywalks would be over by May 2009.

The authority has allocated Rs600 crore in its current budget for skywalk
construction. Gaikwad said MMRDA would help BMC build more skywalks if the authority was able to finish construction of its share of skywalks within the next one year.

The first skywalk from Bandra to Kalanagar, which was nearing completion, would be extended up to Kherwadi junction. The Kherwadi extension will be from Anant Kanekar Marg police post and will be over in four months, Gaikwad said.
