KOHIMA: Despite the drop in prevalence of HIV positive cases in Nagaland, fresh infection is on alarming rise in Tuensang district, bordering Myanmar.

The latest official trend on HIV/AIDS in Nagaland revealed that ante-natal cases (ANC) or parent to child transmission in Tuensang and Noklak subdivisions of the border district recorded prevalence rate at 5.60 and 4.30 respectively against the overall rate of ANC infection of 0.60 in 2007.

Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) data shows ANC prevalence rate which was recorded at 1.25 in 2001 has come down to 0.60 in 2007, while similarly intravenous drugs user (IDU) cases also came down from 6.50 to 1.56 during the same period. However, infection rate among female sex worker (FSW) rose from 4.40 in 2003 to 8.90 in 2007.

NSACS Project Director Dr Neiphie Kire disclosed that the use of drugs was alarming in border villages of Noklak with many people -testing HIV positive- coming regularly from the other side of border.

Kire called upon the law makers to find ways whether some steps could be taken up to curb the menace.
