MUMBAI: Mukesh Ambani is out of the race for the monorail project after the scrutiny of technical bids held at Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The authority has shortlisted a consortium of Anil Ambani-run Reliance Energy and Hitachi, a joint venture between L&T and Scomi group of Malaysia, and Bombardier Transportation India Ltd for the financial bidding for the Rs1,500-crore monorail project.

This is for the second time in Mumbai’s infrastructure projects that Mukesh Ambani’s bid has been rejected. Mukesh lost to his brother Anil in the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) bid held recently by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). For the monorail project, Mukesh had a tie-up with Siemens.

“We have asked all the three shortlisted companies to submit their financial bids by May 15, 2008. We hope to start actual construction of monorail first week of July,” said Gaikwad. A plus for monorail is that it requires no land acquisition whatsoever.

Mukesh Ambani has also bid for the Rs9,125 crore Dharavi Redevelopment project.

The corridors which are untouched by oncoming metro rails are being considered for monorail. Prominent routes being considered for the project are Malabar Hill to Bandra Kurla Complex via Jacob Circle, Keshavrao Khade road at Wadala and Sion, a second one between Chembur and Govandi, and a third from Lokhandwala Complex in Oshiwara to Kanjurmarg.
