While post-mortem reports rule out drowning, Goa cops stick to their version

PANAJI: A second post-mortem report on how Scarlette Keeling Eden, the 16-year-old English tourist whose body was found on Anjuna beach in North Goa on February 18, contradicts the oft-repeated police version that she died by drowning.

The local cops continue to stick by their version of things. The report has revealed that she suffered bruises on her forehead, shin, ankle and may even have been suffocated by the killer who may have pressed her face in the sand.

Now, her mother, Fiona Mackeown with the help of a lawyer and a family friend, has claimed her daughter was murdered. The strongest evidence in their favour is that fact that the second post-mortem also indicated that no water was found in either her stomach or lungs.

The second report seems to indicate that the victim’s mouth was stuffed with sand that may have suffocated her, according to the lawyer, who has a copy of the post-mortem report.

Her body was also not bloated, an indication of death by drowning. The second post-mortem was done at the behest of the mother.

While the police say that she drowned they have not been able to produce the victim’s swimming costume, a fact the mother rubbished when she pointed out that she handed over part of her daughters swim wear to the police.

Her body was found in semi-nude condition, a fact the police did not explain despite the drowning theory.

Police said Scarlette arrived in Goa from Devon on November 20 last year and befriended a mysterious youth who goes by the name of ‘masala’ who it is believed could well be a non-resident Indian possibly living in England or Finland with local connections or friends he made over the years.

This person, Scarlette and her mother visited Karnataka together, the police say without giving details.

The only accurate statement from the police is that the victim’s viscera etc has been sent to Hyderabad for medical analysis.

The victim’s mother and her lawyer have refused to accept the dead body saying there are clear lacunae in the police investigation.
