Lions batsman Jonathan Trott lauds sporting wickets that made the Duleep Trophy so competitive

MUMBAI: The England Lions might have failed to end the jinx of a foreign team winning the Duleep Trophy title, but they have earned oodles of knowledge from the series so far.

This was the opinion conveyed by Lions middle-order batsman Jonathan Trott, who reached a milestone of 100 first-class matches on Sunday.

“We did well in the first Duleep Trophy game, which we won but got stuck
in the second, which I thought we were 140-150 runs short. It’s a huge disappointment but it was a good team effort. It will certainly benefit the players when they tour here again for everyone has earned valuable experience which will be a bonus while playing in the subcontinent,” Trott said.

“Another thing that has come handy in the tour is patience. Patience is the key to success when you bat in these conditions for you have to constantly adapt yourself to the conditions,” he added.

The 26-year-old, who has more than 5,000 runs under his belt in first-class cricket, said his team was surprised to see the wickets which were amenable to fast bowling than spin.

“We thought the wickets are going to be spinner-friendly as it has always been in the subcontinent. But we were surprised to see sporting wickets that had everything for the fast bowlers as much as they offered the batsmen to score runs.

“I read an article earlier where the BCCI had asked for more seamer-friendly wickets. This is probably a hint of the change that is going to occur in the years to come. Whatever…we wanted to win the tournament which we failed,” he said.

Trott was all praise about his team-mates and spinners, Monty Panesar and Adil Rashid, who were impressive in both the Duleep Trophy matches.

“I was standing at slips and saw both of them turn the ball well and got rewarded for their efforts,” he added.

Trott, who plays for Warwickshire in the English County was impressed with Mumbai opener Ajinkya Rahane’s breathtaking knock of 172 runs in the second innings of the match at Vadodara.

“He is a very classy player and impressed us a lot,” said Trott.
