MUMBAI: The Lamington Road police on Wednesday registered a case against a Korean diamond trader in connection with the death of a local diamond trader, who committed suicide on Monday.

Senior inspector NR Mali said, “A case under section 306 has been registered against Oh Soon Jong, 44.” Mali said that besides a suicide note by Prateek Mehta, 48, the police found a bottle of perchloric acid and a photocopy of the Korean national’s passport in Mehta’s office on the fourth-floor of Pancharatna building at Opera House. Perchloric acid is white in colour and is used to clean diamonds.

In his suicide note, Mehta claimed that Oh took diamonds from him but did not pay for them, causing him a huge monetary loss.

Mali said Mehta had been trading with Oh for the past one year. Oh used to visit Mumbai every two months to meet Mehta. The last time he visited Mehta was in December 2007.

On talking to Mehta’s wife and two children, police found they had no knowledge of his business connection with Oh.

Mehta committed suicide on Monday around 10. 30 am. Mehta, the sole proprietor of Soham Gems, consumed acid, called up his wife Shaila, 40, and told her that he had drunk alcohol as he was tense before hanging up the phone.

Ashok, a peon who was alone in the office, overheard the conversation and contacted Shaila and told her what had happened. Mehta’s wife and children rushed to the office and took him to Breach Candy Hospital, where they could not find a bed. Then they rushed him to Bhatia Hospital. He died there at 7 am on Tuesday.
