Botox has been reviled and praised in equal measure, so when Pooja Bedi decided to promote the Botox Institute, Mahafreed Irani decided to question the whys and wherefores of her decision.

Why are you promoting Botox?
I used Botox and was so satisfied that I wanted the whole world to know. I am an actor and have to look beautiful all the time. Botox helps me keep the wrinkles on my forehead away.

Were you apprehensive about using Botox?
Sure I was. I asked my doctor 300 questions before even thinking of getting it done. Most procedures are very advanced. But I was still scared about the side-effects. I made my decision only after all my doubts had been cleared by my specialist.

Did it hurt?
The first time it did. The injection pricked and there were red blemishes. But that was because I went to the wrong doctor. I'd advise people to go to specialists who have experience in skin treatment and Botox.

Should young girls and boys follow your example?
I don't think people below 30 need cosmetic surgery. It is meant for older people who have wrinkles.

Are men who inject Botox attractive?
Most Bollywood hunks that women drool over use Botox today. Who said that Botox is only for women? My doctor claims her clients comprise more men than women.

Botox is not advised for those under 30
Cosmetic surgery and Botox were very expensive procedures, some years ago. But now, with growing competition and advancements in the field of aesthetic surgery, both have become cheaper.
Most patients prefer to get their cosmetic procedures done privately, and today there are many doctors who even visit homes to inject Botox.
Patients have high expectations from aesthetic surgeons and want only the best in the business. I, personally,  wouldn't advise anyone below the age of 30 to use Botox for cosmetic purposes. Only exceptional cases should consider using it. The injection is not painful. In India, however, the cosmetic surgery market is targeted mainly at women.

Overuse of treatment leads to addiction
Many people can't accept the fact that they are getting older. They wish to look young throughout their life. Many people use artificial treatments like Botox to delay their ageing process. If an individual is undergoing such treatment, it should be used in a manner that can be justified. Overuse of such treatments leads to addiction. As a result many people want to try it out at a very young age.
People may also use Botox due to a fear of growing old. It is already an addiction in many Western countries. India is also heading in the same direction. People are so used to superficial beauty that they don't like the way God has made them.
Many people in the film industry use Botox, but we can't really blame them for it. They use it, as their livelihood totally depends on their beauty.
