The government on Tuesday appointed Hemant Karkare, who was joint commissioner of police (administration) in Mumbai, as Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief. He replaced KP Raghuvanshi.
The post of the ATS chief had been vacant for the past three months, ever since Raghuvanshi was promoted as additional director general (Railways).
An IPS officer of 1982 batch, Karkare has the experience of working with RAW. He also served as a superintendent of police in the Naxalite-dominated Chandrapur region.
He has also served as deputy commissioner of police in the communally sensitive Bhiwandi. He has the reputation of being a strict and a no-nonsense officer.
