MUMBAI: A 48-year-old Mahim housewife had a horrendous time after strangers suddenly began calling her and indulging in indecent, and often sexual, conversations. The offender was incidentally traced to her neighbouring flat.

The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of city crime branch has arrested 27-year old Rajat Prakash Bijur for his alleged involvement in the crime. Bijur is an electrical engineering graduate from Chicago with a nine-month course in financial management.

Sheela Mahadig (name changed), a resident of Shanti Co-op Housing Society since June last, started getting calls from several strangers on her landline phone, who would indulge in derogatory conversation with her. When a pestered Mahadig planned to be sweet to one of them in order to find out why, one of the callers told her that her profile along with her telephone number had been posted on a social networking website. Also, obscene comments had been posted alongside prompting strangers to call her.

When Mahadig and her husband surfed on the website concerned, they found at least seven to eight different profiles of her. On surfing the yahoo’s search engine she found that some erotic articles that contained her name had been posted on www.indiansexstories.com, police said. She then gave an application to the CCIC in August and later on December 16, 2007, she filed a police complaint in which she mentioned Bijur’s name.

“We took the statements of the residents of her housing society who told us that Bijur had been involved in tiffs with other residents, mostly over parking. They also told us that he owned a computer and a laptop. On Monday, when we questioned Bijur about him posting profiles of neighbours, he confessed. We have recovered his laptop, but he has hidden his desktop,” said a CCIC official requesting anonymity. Bijur had posted profiles of several females on the websites, he added.

Bijur, who also worked as a manager with ICICI, was booked under various sections of IPC and Information Technology Act and been remanded in custody till January 25 by a local court.
