NEW DELHI: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama Tuesday said that personal ego needs to be killed and hatred vanished to achieve peace in the world.

"Feelings of 'I' and 'me' should go to achieve peace as they are the cause of ego. When the ego is killed, hatred vanishes and ultimately there is peace in society," the Dalai Lama said.

The Tibetan spiritual leader, who lives in exile in India, was speaking at the launch of "Global Foundation for Civilizational Harmony (India)", an organization to study international conflicts and initiate a dialogue between people to solve them.

"The 21st century should be a century of peace. The last century has been one of bloodshed," the Dalai Lama said.

Increase in the number of nuclear weapons, global warming, population explosion, scarcity of natural resources and other ecological issues were the major problems facing us, he said.

"Compassion along with truth and justice would conquer all sufferings and conflicts."

Former president of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who was also present spoke about the ways to enlighten the society. "We should provide education with a value system, transform religions into a spiritual force and remove poverty," he said.

Kalam, known for his love for children, said, "A child is the right candidate to promote right education. The mother, father and primary school teacher are the one's who mould a child."

Other speakers at the launch were Sri Sri Ravishanker, founder of the Art of Living; Swami Ramdev, the Yoga guru and other spiritual and religious leaders from all over the world.

A recorded video message from former Japanese premier Shinzo Abe was shown to the audience. A message from Mata Amritanandmayi was also read out.
