“I’m not a magician,” is the rejoinder to the obvious question you ask Mani Kanga, the lady who can bend a spoon by just by ‘looking’ at it. Her eyes twinkle as she replies that she’s 78 years old psycho-metallurgist.

Kanga is also a qualified dental surgeon, learnt the technique from her friend who came down from New York. She decided to pass on that knowledge to others and conducts classes on how to bend all kinds of cutlery through the “power of thought” by just using the strength of concentration, faith and belief.

‘’It’s not a trick even though it might look like one,” she continues. “You have to use your hands to bend the spoon into a different shape.” The spoons are a sight to look at with their handles twirled into spirals and forks with their tines bent down to the handle or wrapped around each other like strands of ivy.

According to Kanga, the mass of mangled cutlery only proves that one can achieve what one wants through the power of thinking.

She explains that the human mind can ‘dump’ energy into natural dislocations of the metal molecules inside the spoon. This energy softens the spoon, as if it had been heated, allowing you to bend it in ways you can’t do with simple physical force.

“That’s why people feel a little hot individuals feel their heated up, once the spoon bending session is over,” says Mani. The session starts with a meditation session, which she says is the crucial part as on has to first find the energy within.

“Once the person has the ability to feel who he or she is, the person can then simply bring that energy into his hands. Imagine it to be a like a fireball, which can slowly be moved with your hands. Make the intention to bend it and then focus where the energy goes. And that’s how it bends,” she adds.

Age is never a bar to learning spoon bending but according to Mani, people who learn the technique should never misuse it. As an example, she sights the case of her seven-year old nephew who bent all the spoons at his home.

Though spoon bending has been fraught with controversy, what separates it from the harmful and the harmless is its purpose.

“You can also learn spoon bending to improve on your concentration,” she signs off. To sign up with her class, drop in to the Shamiana Festival this week at Oceana building, Marine Drive.
