Rose, the first transgender to host a TV show in India, wields the pen to fight the system

CHENNAI: Rose (28), the first trangender in the country to host a television programme and the first one to openly advocate scientific sexual reconstruction surgery (SRS), has taken to the pen. Two leading publishing houses have evinced interest in publishing ‘her’ autobiography, tentatively titled ‘My Sexuality’.

“Use the feminine pronoun when you write about me,” Rose tells DNA after sending the manuscript of the first chapter of her book to Penguin and Harper Collins, “because that is what I use for people of my ilk in my book”.

Both the publishing houses, she says, have responded positively. The book will be of about 200 pages, in 14 chapters. Tamil channel Star Vijay will soon telecast a talk show on ‘alternative sexuality and other bold sexual themes’ with Rose as the host.

“A large part of my book will be about how I discovered my sexuality, my sexual fantasies and experiences and, well, some silly things. The first chapter is about how a man wooed me, how I fell in love with him and how he ditched me. People writing autobiographies want to project the best part of their lives, but I will bare it all.” Rose says.

Besides discussing “how uncomfortable I felt in an all-boys’ school in the twelfth standard” and “how I felt pathetic after realising that my boyfriend was a gay,” Rose promises to make some bold revelations: how penury forced her into sex work in Chennai, her “kidnap and attempted rape three months ago and the trauma that took her to the verge of suicide”. “Basically, I will be telling tales which a woman does not dare to,” she says.

Rose, who did a master’s in biomedical engineering in the US between 2001 and 2004, will also discuss in her book, how Americans, “who, behind their facade of an open society, violently hate alternative sexuality.” Referring to the internationally acclaimed Harry Benjamin standards for transsexuals seeking SRS, Rose will share her experiences of her transformation from male towards female, aided by hormone therapy and counselling. The last chapter of the book will have some harsh takes on the society for its treatment of transgenders and will advocate legal endorsement for a third gender.

Rose, who wants to be a “man’s wife,” but is scared of being dumped again, lets you into one of the secrets she is to reveal in her book: “Shh... my earlier name was Ramesh. I hate that name.”
