The civic administration’s drive to improve the condition of traffic in the city by providing parking spaces now seems to come at a cost of Mumbai’s open spaces.

The administration plans to construct car parks under two well-maintained gardens in the city. It will table a proposal before the civic improvements committee today for inclusion of these plots in the list of plots where construction of one or two-tier parking arrangement with facility for shopping is permissible.

The garden plots—near Hinduja Hospital in Mahim and Nare Park in Parel—are both in good shape. As per current reservations on the plots, erecting a parking facility under them is not allowed.

However, arguing that parking space is needed in the area because of the high footfall, additional municipal commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastava said, “There is no reason why these open spaces should be excluded from the proposal to construct underground car parks when others are included. There is a need for one in the area.”

The BMC, as part of its policy, has decided to scout for open plots for underground parking as they are ‘devoid’ of utilities.

Interestingly, the ground on Veer Savarkar Road, Mahim opposite Bombay Scottish School is presently maintained jointly by Kridangan Sangopan Samiti and Bombay Roller Skating Association. It houses a skating rink. It was given to the association on adoption basis, but the BMC has not renewed the land deeds.

MS Kamat, trustee Kridangan Sangopan Samiti opined that residents should be consulted before taking any such decision. He said, “The BMC should take everyone into confidence.”

Similar proposals for construction of underground car parks is on the anvil at the open plot near Siddhivinayak Temple at Nardulla Tank ground and at another plot in Mulund.
