MUMBAI: A Marathi short film, portraying the mental trauma of a transexual man, who is ostracised by the society, has been selected for the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival to be held from February 28 to March 6, 2008.

"A transexual person is one who feels and behaves like opposite sex. The film titled `Why', tries to understand their psyche and mental trauma," film's producer and director Aashish Kulkarni said here.

The film questions the society's approach and attitude towards this section of people, who are ostracised by the society for no fault of their's, Kulkarni said.

"It was very difficult role for me. I had to get under the skin of my character without being vulgar. For me, it was important to be able to convey the meaning without overdoing it," film's lead actor Jayant Gadekar said.

The festival jury in their review appreciated the film's content and a top official has even promised assistance for its successful screening.

"Content and story are good. Everyone does a decent job and serves their purpose, just wish picture was clearer. Good job done overall. I will be in touch with you about how you can promote your film for a successful screening," wrote festival Director of Acquisitions Cyndy Johnson, in his mail to Kulkarni, accepting the film in the festival.
